  • Health Canada – Traditional Food Security Assessment (TFSA) Initiative

Project Overview

  • Client: Health Canada
  • Project Location: Canada-wide
  • Start Date: Ongoing
  • End Date: Ongoing

Food insecurity remains a major public health issue for Indigenous communities in Canada, particularly among Inuit and First Nations populations. Challenges such as economic disadvantages, high food prices, and limited transportation access contribute to the lack of traditional and market foods in remote areas.

To address these concerns, Three Sisters Consulting is partnering with Health Canada to facilitate the dissemination and examination of a Traditional Food Security Assessment (TFSA) paper. This initiative aims to analyze key factors affecting Indigenous food security—availability, access, utilization, and stability—and develop culturally specific solutions for sustainable food systems.

Scope of Work & Key Deliverables
Three Sisters Consulting is leading multiple aspects of this initiative, including:
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Outreach: Connecting with subject matter experts, academics, and Indigenous community representatives to assess food security challenges and solutions.
  • Facilitation & Knowledge Sharing: Organizing engagement sessions and discussions to review the TFSA findings and generate actionable insights.
  • Data Collection & Policy Development: Providing valuable data to inform the creation of a national-level Health Impact Assessment (HIA) focused on Indigenous food security.
  • Cultural Adaptation & Strategy Design: Ensuring proposed solutions are Indigenous-led and align with community needs, values, and traditions.
Project Status & Next Steps
The initiative is currently in the engagement and research phase, with consultations ongoing across Indigenous communities. Three Sisters Consulting continues to work alongside Health Canada to refine strategies, inform policy development, and support Indigenous food security initiatives at the national level.
